GB U-17s Boys v Latvia: REPORT

Great Britain Under-17 boys recorded an impressive 53-0 (16-0, 14-0, 11-0, 12-0) victory over their Latvian counterparts on Friday.

It was an early start in Valletta, Malta, but the GB team showed no signs of tiredness after last night’s 19-7 defeat to Germany as they comfortably romped to victory.

By the end of the first quarter, GB were 16-0 ahead against Latvia and that lead was extended to 30-0 at half-time.

With goal difference possibly being a deciding factor in who finishes in the top two qualifying berths, it was important Great Britain scored more than Malta managed against Latvia last night.

Topping that 51-0 triumph may have looked a difficult task at the start, but a firm defence and 23 second-half goals was enough to better Malta’s result by two.

The remarkable win, which saw Enfield’s Charlie Briers score nine, means GB has three points from their first two European Games Water Polo Qualifiers.

GB’s next match in Group D is this evening (17:15pm start UK time) against Switzerland, who will be looking to bounce back after losing their opening game 20-4 to hosts Malta earlier today.

The team will be taking nothing for granted, but a triumph for GB against the Swiss is likely to set up a winner-takes-all contest against hosts Malta on Saturday.

Latvia, meanwhile, are firmly rooted to the bottom of Group D with zero points and having conceded 104 goals.
