Enfield 1sts stay top with Whitgift win

Enfield 1sts’ London League winning streak continued on Wednesday as they edged past Whitgift Trinity 12-7 (1-1, 6-2, 1-2, 4-2) to make it three away wins from three in June.

The latest impressive victory on the road sees Enfield stay top of Division Two and move four points clear of second placed Reading.

After the long trip south, it was the north Londoners who opened the scoring during a sluggish first quarter.

Richard Waller found space and then the top corner with a powerful finish, but Enfield failed to make the most of their dominance and allowed Whitgift to level from 5m.

In the second, Whitgift’s creaking defence finally gave way as Charlie Briers slammed home twice from 2m and Alex Waller also bagged a well-taken double.

Whitgift responded on a couple of occasions, but Rob Lucas and R Waller ensured that Enfield were 7-3 up at the half.

The third quarter had echoes of the first for the visitors, as numerous shots went astray and Whitgift were able to pull the score back to 7-5.

Andy Rollé then fired in Enfield’s only goal of the period from 5m to make it 8-5 going into the final eight minutes.

Having won the third 2-1, the momentum was Whitgift and two quick goals for the hosts made it an 8-7 game with 4.57 left to play.

Thankfully Briers stepped up to settle any nerves with a breakaway goal, before Rollé added his second of the night to put the game out of reach for Whitgift.

Lucas and Briers put some late gloss on the result to make it 12-7 and Craig Snowdon was unlucky to see his last-second lob from the halfway line ruled out on the buzzer.
