Great Britain’s U19s qualify for European Championships

Great Britain’s U19s were celebrating in Manchester on Sunday after successfully qualifying for this summer’s European Championships in Belarus.

After their final match against Greece, head coach Sean King triumphantly raised his arms and hugged each of his players as their 14-2 (5-1, 4-1, 1-0, 4-0) defeat was enough to beat Ukraine to the second qualifying place on goal difference.

This is the first time in 10 years a British junior men’s team have reached the main tournament and the last time that happened, Sean was one of the squad’s key players.

Earlier in the tournament, Great Britain had beaten Lithuania 22-7 and tied with Ukraine 7-7 to set up the thrilling finale.

GB started their decisive Group C match against Greece knowing they needed to not lose by 17 or more goals to pip Ukraine and their defence held firm to ensure they will be heading to Minsk in August.

Goalkeeper Thomas Manley made several sensational saves for GB, while captain Matt Madden and Chris Sturtevant fired home to help spark the jubilant scenes.
