LEN Euro Cup Water Polo, final, 2nd leg – Preview

Ferencvaros to complete the journey?

The return game of the Euro Cup final seems to be a mere formality as Ferencvaros earned a devastating 6-12 win in Oradea.

In fact, no team has ever come back from a 6-goal defeat when playing on a home-and-away basis, especially not after being beaten at home. Though Oradea had a great run and ousted two strong Italian sides in the knockout phase but the newly shaped team of Ferencvaros, featuring some outstanding Hungarian and Serbian Olympic gold medallist players, was overwhelming in the first leg.

Winning 12-6 the Budapest based side got on the verge of another European triumph. They won the Cupwinners’ Cup four times (1974, 1977, 1979, 1998), though lost the LEN Trophy final twice in 1995 and 1997 (the previous name for the Euro Cup). Nineteen years gone since they won the last European trophy in their rich history – now they are already holding the Euro Cup with one hand.
